Job Overview

The Railway Infrastructure Safety Engineer will lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of safety protocols across ZRC’s rail network. Reporting to the Head of Safety, the role involves conducting risk assessments, developing safety management systems, and ensuring compliance with national and international railway safety standards. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and update the Railway Safety Management System (RSMS) in line with ISO 45001 and EN 50126 standards.
• Conduct comprehensive risk assessments for new track installations, bridge works, and signalling upgrades.
• Lead safety audits and inspections across all railway assets, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions.
• Collaborate with project engineers to integrate safety requirements into design specifications and construction plans.
• Provide technical guidance and training to operational staff on safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
• Monitor incident reports, perform root‑cause analyses, and implement preventive measures to reduce recurrence.
• Liaise with the Zambia Railway Safety Authority and other regulatory bodies to ensure full compliance.
• Prepare safety performance dashboards and present findings to senior management.

Required Skills

• In‑depth knowledge of railway safety standards, risk assessment methodologies, and safety engineering principles.
• Proficiency in safety management software and data analysis tools.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills for drafting reports, delivering training, and interfacing with regulators.
• Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Railway Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Railway Safety Management certification are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in railway safety engineering, infrastructure safety, or a comparable role within the transportation sector. Experience with large‑scale rail projects and regulatory compliance is essential.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive monthly salary ranging from SSP 150,000 to SSP 250,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives may be offered.
