Job Overview
The Senior Fleet Maintenance Engineer will lead the technical maintenance program for Caterpillar’s extensive fleet of heavy equipment operating across Zambia. This role is responsible for ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and safety of machines ranging from excavators and bulldozers to diesel generators. Reporting to the Fleet Maintenance Manager, you will develop maintenance strategies, oversee a team of technicians, and collaborate with customers to deliver proactive service solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and continuously improve preventive maintenance schedules for a fleet of over 200 Caterpillar machines.
- Lead a team of 12 senior technicians and apprentices, providing mentorship, performance reviews, and technical guidance.
- Conduct root‑cause analysis on equipment failures and develop corrective action plans to reduce repeat incidents.
- Coordinate with parts inventory managers to ensure critical components are stocked, minimizing equipment downtime.
- Collaborate with customers, project managers, and field engineers to align maintenance activities with project timelines.
- Maintain detailed maintenance records in Caterpillar’s digital asset management system, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Prepare and present monthly performance reports, highlighting key metrics such as equipment availability, mean time between failures (MTBF), and cost of maintenance.
- Support the development of training programs for on‑site technicians and client personnel.
- Ensure all maintenance activities adhere to ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 standards.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, leveraging data analytics to optimize fleet performance.
Required Skills
- Extensive knowledge of Caterpillar equipment, hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and electronic control modules.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic software and telematics platforms for condition‑based monitoring.
- Strong leadership and team‑building abilities, with a focus on safety culture.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to make data‑driven decisions.
- Effective communication skills for interfacing with clients, senior management, and cross‑functional teams.
- Project management experience, including budgeting and resource allocation.
- Familiarity with Zambian occupational health and safety regulations.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as CAT Certified Technician, ISO 9001 Lead Auditor, or a recognized Heavy Equipment Maintenance qualification are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in heavy equipment maintenance, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory or lead engineering role. Experience working with Caterpillar machinery or in a similar high‑volume fleet environment is essential.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances for overtime, travel, and hazardous duty may be included.
