Job Overview

This role is part of Arup Zambia’s initiative to enhance urban resilience in Southern Africa. The Urban Resilience Planner will lead projects addressing climate change impacts, urbanization challenges, and sustainable development in Choma and surrounding regions. The position requires collaboration with municipal authorities, NGOs, and international stakeholders to design adaptive infrastructure and policy frameworks. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop urban resilience strategies for climate change adaptation and disaster risk management
  • Conduct spatial analysis and urban modeling to assess vulnerability and prioritize interventions
  • Design sustainable infrastructure projects, including green spaces, flood mitigation systems, and energy-efficient buildings
  • Engage with local communities to co-create solutions and ensure inclusive planning
  • Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and policy recommendations for municipal stakeholders

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in GIS, CAD, and urban simulation software (e.g., ArcGIS, AutoCAD, CityEngine)
  • Strong understanding of climate resilience frameworks and UN-Habitat guidelines
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and cross-sector collaboration
  • Ability to analyze demographic and environmental data for urban planning decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and local languages (Bemba/Nsenga preferred)

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Master’s Degree in Urban Resilience or Sustainable Development (desirable)

Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in urban planning, climate adaptation, or infrastructure development
  • Proven track record in delivering urban resilience projects in African contexts

Salary

250,000 – 400,000 ZMW per annum, commensurate with experience.
