Job Overview

The Marine Conservation Program Officer will lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of marine and freshwater conservation projects within the Luangwa River basin. This role involves collaborating with local communities, government agencies, and international partners to develop strategies that protect aquatic biodiversity, improve water quality, and promote sustainable resource use. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and execute marine conservation action plans that address habitat degradation, overfishing, and pollution in the Luangwa River.
• Coordinate field surveys, data collection, and scientific monitoring to assess ecosystem health and species populations.
• Engage with local fishing communities to promote sustainable practices, alternative livelihoods, and community‑led stewardship.
• Prepare technical reports, policy briefs, and grant proposals to secure funding and influence national environmental policies.
• Facilitate workshops, training sessions, and awareness campaigns for stakeholders at the village, district, and national levels.
• Collaborate with WWF’s regional and global teams to integrate Luangwa initiatives into broader conservation frameworks.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of marine and freshwater ecology, especially riverine systems.
• Proficiency in GIS, data analysis software, and scientific reporting.
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills for community outreach.
• Ability to write compelling grant proposals and policy documents.
• Project management experience with a focus on environmental programs.
• Fluency in English; proficiency in local languages such as Chewa or Tumbuka is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates holding a Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., Project Management Professional, GIS specialist) will be given preference.

Experience

Applicants should have a minimum of three to five years of hands‑on experience in marine or freshwater conservation, preferably within Zambia or the Southern African region. Experience working with NGOs, government bodies, or international donors is highly valued.

Salary
