Job Overview

The Head of Renewable Energy Trading will lead the design, execution, and optimization of TotalEnergies Zambia’s renewable energy trading portfolio. Reporting directly to the Regional Head of Trading, the incumbent will develop trading strategies for solar, wind, and hydro assets, manage market risk, and ensure compliance with local regulations. This senior position requires a deep understanding of Zambia’s power market, regional grid dynamics, and the evolving regulatory framework governing renewable energy certificates and power purchase agreements. The role is pivotal in translating the company’s sustainability commitments into profitable trading operations, fostering relationships with utilities, brokers, and independent power producers, and positioning TotalEnergies as a market leader in renewable energy trading across Southern Africa.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement short‑term and long‑term trading strategies for solar, wind, and hydro power assets.
  • Monitor market prices, grid constraints, and regulatory changes to optimize trade execution and risk exposure.
  • Lead a team of traders, analysts, and risk managers, providing mentorship and performance feedback.
  • Negotiate power purchase agreements, renewable energy certificates, and ancillary service contracts with utilities and corporate off‑takers.
  • Collaborate with the Renewable Projects Development team to align trading strategies with new asset roll‑outs.
  • Maintain robust risk management frameworks, including VaR, stress testing, and scenario analysis.
  • Prepare regular market intelligence reports and present trading performance to senior leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with Zambian Energy Regulation Board (ERB) guidelines and international trading standards.
  • Drive the adoption of digital trading platforms and data analytics tools to enhance decision‑making.
  • Represent TotalEnergies at industry forums, conferences, and stakeholder meetings to promote the company’s trading capabilities.

Required Skills

  • Expert knowledge of electricity markets, especially renewable energy trading in Southern Africa.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with proficiency in Excel, Python, or R for modeling.
  • Proven leadership experience managing high‑performing trading teams.
  • Excellent negotiation and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Deep understanding of risk management techniques and regulatory compliance.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting to senior executives.

Education

A Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Energy Management, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as CFA, FRM, or CTP are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years of experience in energy trading, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role overseeing renewable energy assets. Demonstrated success in developing profitable trading strategies and managing market risk in emerging markets is essential.

Salary

The competitive salary range for this position is SSP 150,000 to 250,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. A performance‑based bonus structure is also offered.
