Job Overview

The Senior Renewable Energy Storage Engineer will lead the design, integration, and optimization of battery storage systems for utility‑scale and commercial renewable projects. Reporting to the Head of Renewable Energy, you will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including project development, grid operations, and digital analytics, to deliver reliable, cost‑effective storage solutions that support Zambia’s growing energy demand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end‑to‑end engineering of battery energy storage systems (BESS), including feasibility studies, system sizing, and detailed design.
  • Coordinate with vendors, EPC contractors, and local utilities to ensure seamless integration of storage assets into the grid.
  • Develop and validate performance models, conduct simulations, and perform risk assessments to optimize system reliability.
  • Oversee commissioning, testing, and performance verification of storage installations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ensure compliance with Zambian regulatory standards, IEC/IEEE codes, and GE’s internal safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with the digital analytics team to implement real‑time monitoring and predictive maintenance tools.
  • Prepare technical reports, cost‑benefit analyses, and stakeholder presentations.

Required Skills

  • Deep expertise in battery technologies (Li‑ion, flow, sodium‑sulfur) and power electronics.
  • Proficiency in simulation software such as PSS®E, HOMER, or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Strong understanding of grid interconnection standards and ancillary services.
  • Project management experience with ability to lead complex, multi‑disciplinary projects.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in multicultural environments and travel across Zambia as required.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., CEB, PMP) are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of 8 years of hands‑on experience in renewable energy storage design, implementation, or operation. Prior experience with utility‑scale projects in Africa is a strong advantage.

Salary
