Job Overview
The Solar Photovoltaic Systems Designer will be responsible for creating detailed engineering designs for solar PV projects ranging from utility‑scale farms to community mini‑grids in the Kalabo region and beyond. This role involves conducting site assessments, performing energy yield simulations, selecting appropriate components, and producing comprehensive design documentation that meets both international standards and local regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with project managers, procurement specialists, and field engineers to ensure that designs are feasible, cost‑effective, and optimized for performance. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough site surveys and feasibility studies to assess solar resource availability and site constraints.
- Develop detailed single‑line diagrams, layout plans, and electrical schematics using industry‑standard software such as PVsyst, AutoCAD, and PVSyst.
- Perform energy yield analyses and financial modeling to determine project viability and return on investment.
- Select appropriate modules, inverters, mounting structures, and balance‑of‑system components based on performance, cost, and local availability.
- Prepare comprehensive design packages, including technical specifications, bill of quantities, and construction drawings.
- Coordinate with procurement and supply chain teams to ensure selected components meet quality standards and delivery timelines.
- Support the permitting process by preparing documentation required by the Zambian Energy Regulation Board and local authorities.
- Collaborate with construction and commissioning teams to resolve design‑related issues on‑site.
- Stay updated on emerging solar technologies, standards, and best practices to continuously improve design processes.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in solar design software (PVsyst, Helioscope, AutoCAD, SketchUp).
- Strong understanding of electrical codes, grid interconnection standards, and IEC standards.
- Excellent analytical skills for energy modeling and performance optimization.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and translate them into actionable construction documents.

Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as NABCEP PV Designer or equivalent are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in solar photovoltaic system design, preferably with exposure to utility‑scale projects and rural mini‑grid deployments. Experience working in Zambia or similar African markets is an advantage.
Salary
The annual salary range for this position is SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and other incentives may be offered.
