Job Overview
The Chief Data Scientist will lead Microsoft Zambia’s data science strategy, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of advanced analytics and AI solutions that address local market challenges. Reporting to the Head of Data & Analytics, the role involves shaping data‑driven decision‑making across product development, customer engagement, and operational efficiency. The incumbent will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including engineering, sales, marketing, and public sector partners, to translate complex data sets into actionable insights that drive business growth. This position is a pivotal part of Microsoft’s Hiring in Zambia initiative, offering a unique platform to influence technology adoption and digital transformation across the region.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and execute the data science roadmap aligned with Microsoft’s strategic objectives in Zambia.
- Lead a high‑performing team of data scientists, analysts, and machine learning engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
- Design, prototype, and scale machine learning models for predictive analytics, natural language processing, computer vision, and recommendation systems.
- Collaborate with product managers and engineers to integrate AI capabilities into Microsoft cloud services and enterprise solutions.
- Partner with government and industry stakeholders to develop data‑driven policies and solutions that support economic development and digital inclusion.
- Establish best practices for data governance, model validation, and ethical AI deployment.
- Present insights and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and external partners.
- Drive thought leadership through publications, conferences, and community workshops on AI and data science in Africa.
Required Skills
- Expertise in statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms, and deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.).
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL.
- Strong experience with cloud platforms, especially Microsoft Azure AI services.
- Demonstrated ability to translate business problems into analytical solutions.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Leadership experience managing multidisciplinary data teams.
- Knowledge of data privacy regulations and ethical AI principles.
Education
A Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline is required. Advanced certifications in Azure AI, Machine Learning, or related fields are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of 8 years of hands‑on experience in data science, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership or chief role. Proven track record of delivering AI solutions at scale in enterprise environments, preferably within the African market.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 250,000 to SSP 400,000 per month, commensurate with experience and expertise. Additional performance‑based incentives and equity options may be offered.
