Job Overview
The Network Optimization Engineer will play a pivotal role in enhancing the performance, capacity, and reliability of MTN Zambia’s radio access network (RAN) in the Petauke region and beyond. Reporting to the Head of Network Engineering, the successful candidate will analyze network data, design optimization strategies, and implement solutions that improve coverage, reduce dropped calls, and increase data throughput. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive drive‑test and performance analysis to identify coverage gaps, capacity constraints, and quality of service issues.
- Develop and implement optimization plans for LTE and emerging 5G networks, including parameter tuning, antenna tilt adjustments, and load balancing.
- Collaborate with Radio Planning, RF Engineering, and Core Network teams to ensure alignment of optimization activities with overall network strategy.
- Utilize network monitoring tools, KPI dashboards, and big‑data analytics to track performance trends and recommend corrective actions.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, visualizations, and presentations for senior management and external stakeholders.
- Participate in network rollout projects, providing optimization input during site acquisition, installation, and commissioning phases.
- Stay abreast of industry standards, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance and best practices.
Required Skills
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in network performance tools such as Atoll, TEMS, or similar.
- In‑depth knowledge of LTE, 5G NR, and radio frequency principles.
- Experience with KPI analysis, drive‑test data processing, and optimization algorithms.
- Excellent problem‑solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills for cross‑team collaboration and stakeholder reporting.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple optimization projects simultaneously.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP, Nokia NRS, or Ericsson certifications are considered an advantage.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in mobile network optimization, preferably within a major telecom operator. Demonstrated experience with LTE and early‑stage 5G deployments is essential. Prior exposure to network planning or RF engineering will be viewed favorably.
