Job Overview

The 5G Network Planning Engineer will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and implementing 5G radio access networks (RAN) to ensure seamless coverage, capacity, and quality of service across diverse terrains in Zambia. This position involves close collaboration with cross‑functional teams, including RF engineers, product managers, and field deployment crews, to translate business requirements into technical solutions. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive 5G network designs, including site selection, antenna configuration, and backhaul planning.
  • Perform RF propagation analysis and capacity forecasting using industry‑standard tools such as Atoll, Planet, or iBwave.
  • Collaborate with spectrum regulators and local authorities to secure necessary permits and ensure compliance with national standards.
  • Optimize network parameters post‑deployment to achieve target KPIs for throughput, latency, and reliability.
  • Lead field trials and drive performance validation through drive‑test measurements and drive‑test data analysis.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and coordinate with project managers to meet delivery timelines.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, documentation, and presentations for internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Stay abreast of emerging 5G technologies, standards updates, and industry best practices to continuously improve network planning processes.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of 5G NR architecture, LTE‑Advanced, and radio frequency fundamentals.
  • Proficiency with network planning and simulation software (e.g., Atoll, Planet, iBwave).
  • Experience in spectrum analysis, interference mitigation, and capacity planning.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret large data sets and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Effective communication and presentation abilities, both written and verbal.
  • Project management experience, including coordination of multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to fast‑changing project requirements.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced certifications such as Huawei Certified Network Professional (HCNP) – Radio, or equivalent industry credentials, are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in mobile network planning, preferably with a focus on 5G deployments.
