Job Overview
The Community Relations Manager will lead BHP’s engagement initiatives with local communities surrounding the Kitwe mining operations. This role is pivotal in building trust, facilitating dialogue, and delivering CSR programs that address community needs while supporting the company’s social license to operate. The manager will collaborate with internal stakeholders, government agencies, NGOs, and community leaders to design, implement, and monitor projects in health, education, livelihood development, and environmental conservation. By aligning community priorities with BHP’s strategic objectives, the manager will help ensure sustainable development and mitigate social risks. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive community engagement strategy aligned with BHP’s CSR vision.
- Conduct stakeholder mapping, needs assessments, and impact analyses to inform program design.
- Manage the planning, budgeting, and delivery of community projects, ensuring timely execution and measurable outcomes.
- Facilitate regular consultations, town‑hall meetings, and feedback mechanisms with community representatives.
- Collaborate with internal departments such as Operations, Health & Safety, and Legal to integrate community considerations into business decisions.
- Prepare detailed reports, dashboards, and presentations for senior management and external partners.
- Monitor compliance with local regulations, international standards, and BHP’s internal policies.
- Represent BHP at industry forums, government panels, and community events.
Required Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English and preferably a local language (e.g., Bemba or Nyanja).
- Strong project management capabilities, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk mitigation.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholder groups.
- Analytical mindset for assessing social impact and interpreting data.
- Negotiation and conflict‑resolution expertise.
- Knowledge of Zambian mining regulations, CSR best practices, and community development frameworks.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Development Studies, Sociology, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications in CSR, Project Management, or Community Development is highly desirable.
Experience
Applicants should have 5‑7 years of progressive experience in community relations, CSR, or stakeholder engagement, preferably within the mining or natural resources sector. Experience working in Zambia or other African contexts is an advantage.
Salary
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from SSP 150,000 to SSP 250,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based incentives and annual reviews are part of the compensation package.
