Job Overview
The Senior Insurance Underwriting Manager will lead the underwriting team in assessing, pricing, and managing commercial insurance risks. Reporting directly to the Head of Underwriting, this role is pivotal in shaping underwriting policies, driving profitability, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards set by the Insurance Authority of Zambia. The successful candidate will collaborate with sales, actuarial, claims, and risk management functions to develop innovative solutions that align with market demands while safeguarding the company’s risk appetite. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement underwriting guidelines for commercial lines, including property, liability, marine, and engineering risks.
- Lead a team of underwriters, providing coaching, performance feedback, and professional development plans.
- Analyze complex risk submissions, conduct profitability assessments, and determine appropriate pricing structures.
- Collaborate with the actuarial department to refine rating models and ensure accurate risk pricing.
- Monitor portfolio performance, identify emerging trends, and recommend corrective actions to maintain target loss ratios.
- Ensure compliance with the Insurance Act, local regulations, and internal risk management policies.
- Represent Old Mutual in industry forums, client meetings, and regulatory discussions to promote the brand and gather market intelligence.
- Drive digital underwriting initiatives, leveraging data analytics and automation tools to improve efficiency.
Required Skills
- Strong analytical and quantitative abilities with a solid grasp of actuarial concepts.
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills for interfacing with brokers, clients, and senior management.
- Proficiency in underwriting software platforms and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Leadership experience with a track record of building and motivating high‑performing teams.
- Strategic thinking and the ability to translate market insights into actionable underwriting policies.
- Knowledge of Zambian insurance regulations and international best practices.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Risk Management, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualifications, ACII, or equivalent are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of ten years of progressive experience in commercial insurance underwriting, with at least three years in a supervisory or managerial capacity. Experience within the Southern African market, particularly Zambia, is preferred.
Salary
The role offers a competitive salary range of SSP 250,000 to SSP 350,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and long‑term incentive schemes are also part of the remuneration package.
